On Tuesday 24th September, our KS1 team of budding young cricketers, who had reached the Kent Schools Games Finals for Rapid Fire Cricket in July, enjoyed a fantastic morning at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Canterbury. The trip had been planned for them to watch day 2 of the match between Kent and Hampshire, but heavy rain meant there was no play. However, this did not dampen the children’s enthusiasm as they explored the St Lawrence Ground, made the obligatory visit to the gift shop, and best of all, met some of the Kent players. Firstly, they met Joe Denly, who played for England during this summer’s Ashes Series with Australia.
Then later, Zak Crawley (who has recently been chosen for England’s winter tour to New Zealand and South Africa), Darren Stevens, Ollie Robinson, Grant Stewart, Ivan Thomas and former South African test cricketer, Heino Kuhn, all came down specially to talk with the children. This was a much appreciated gesture from the Kent players, and has certainly inspired our young players.
Many thanks to our Vice Chair of School Governors, Cllr Derek Murphy, for arranging the tickets for the day and for being our guide at the St Lawrence Ground. Also, to Oscar’s Mum and Isaac’s Dad, for their invaluable help on this trip.
Mrs Hodgson and Mr Earl.
