Reading

Reading at Deal Parochial School

Throughout the school children have the opportunity to read as part of a group (in shared whole class reading and guided reading) and individually (to an adult, another child or to themselves).

In Reception Class Rigby Star Phonics and Pearson Phonics Bug books are used during shared and guided reading sessions. Individual and home reading books are drawn from Collins Big Cat, Oxford Reading Tree and Dandelion Readers. The teacher carries out guided reading sessions with a group of children each day and TAs, volunteers and parents listen to children read individually.

How phonics is taught

Phonics teaching starts in the Foundation Stage in the Reception Class and addresses the essential skills and knowledge found in both the Reading and Writing strands of the Literacy Area of Learning and Development. The main scheme of work followed is Letters and Sounds and all staff have received training on how to implement this.

There is a daily phonics lesson in all classes from Reception Class to Year 3. In Reception Class phonics teaching is enlivened and supported by the use of the Pearson Phonics Bug website and books. Other phonics books used in Reception Class to practise reading phonetically are: Rigby Star Phonics; Dandelion Readers and Oxford Reading Tree Songbirds.

In Years 1 to 3 the website Phonics Play is used. Opportunities to develop and practise correct letter formation and spelling form an integral part of these sessions.

In Years 1 and 2 there are a variety of books used to teach reading: Collins Big Cat; Rigby Rockets; Rigby Star; Oxford Reading Tree and Oxford Reading Tree Songbirds. Again the teacher carries out guided reading sessions with a group of children each day and TAs, volunteers and parents listen to children read individually.

Reading continued

All books are banded according to Reading Recovery Bands and phonic based reading books are linked to the Letters and Sounds phases, i.e. Rigby Star Phonics and Pearson Phonics Bug. Children’s progress throughout these book bands is tracked closely by both the teacher and the TA.

In KS2 the school buys into a resource called Accelerated Reader which allows children to take online quizzes on the books they have read individually or during guided reading sessions. This resource provides children with a record of how much they are reading and is a very useful tracking tool for teachers. In KS2 there are daily guided reading sessions which deliver the breadth of skills and knowledge required to become a successful reader.

All children are expected to read regularly at home, and parents and carers are requested to write in their child’s reading record book each night and this is monitored closely by teachers and TAs.
