Girls’ Football – Brilliant Effort in McCarthey Cup 2019.

Our girls’ football team attended their second tournament in a week when they travelled to St Faiths in Ash for this year’s McCarthey Cup tournament.

We started our round robin matches well against Wingham with Ruby scoring to help us win 1-0. Next we drew 0-0 with Sibertswold.

Our final round robin match was against St Richards and we knew we had to score 3 goals to go directly through to the semi-finals. In the first half we scored a lovely goal (Ruby took the ball down the right wing and crossed into the box to Ava, who was waiting to score). However, as the match progressed, we just couldn’t score a second despite the chances we were making. Then with about 30 seconds remaining of the match, Ruby skilfully worked an opening in St Richards’ box and scored to finish the match 2-0. Our reward was a ‘sudden death’ penalty shoot out against Sibertswold to claim a semi-final place. We went first and Ruby scored. Sibertswold did not convert their penalty and so we went through to meet St Faiths in the semi-finals.

The semi-final was literally a game of two halves. We dominated the first half making some really good chances with Ruby scoring one of them. The roles were reversed in the second half with St Faiths equalising and then pressing for a second goal. However, our defence remained solid and the game finished 1-1. So it was a penalty shoot out again! Ruby went first and scored. St Faiths then scored. Abigail’s penalty was then saved, and then Rosie saved St Faiths next penalty. Ava then converted her penalty, but so did St Faiths. St Faiths’ keeper then saved Alice’s penalty before St Faiths scored their penalty to go through to the final.

Well done girls. You played fantastically well and your commitment and sportsmanship was really commendable. I was very proud of you all.

Many thanks to all the parents who helped with transport and who came to support us.
