Deal Parochial C.E.P. School uses a published, approved PHSE scheme of work called Jigsaw.

Intent

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to foster confident, resilient children who are equipped with the social and emotional skills to navigate the modern world. It aims to support the development of self-esteem, allowing children to understand and respect their own beliefs and those of others, while also learning to manage their feelings and overcome barriers. Our curriculum encourages children to value respectful opinions, develop empathy, and strengthen their understanding of diverse religious and cultural beliefs. By nurturing these key qualities, we aim to help children build a strong foundation for becoming caring, responsible citizens who can thrive both academically and personally.

Implementation

PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which provides comprehensive lesson plans and resources to support teachers in delivering engaging, high-quality lessons. It is taught as a discreet subject on a weekly basis, with each lesson aligned to the Jigsaw charter. The Jigsaw curriculum is made up of six half-term units, referred to as 'Puzzles,' with each Puzzle containing six lessons, or 'Pieces,' for each academic year.

The six units are:

  • Term 1: Being Me in My World
  • Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
  • Term 3: Dreams and Goals
  • Term 4: Healthy Me
  • Term 5: Relationships
  • Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Impact

Starting from their individual experiences, children will develop a deeper understanding and respect for both themselves and others. They will learn how their behaviour choices can impact those around them and will be able to explain why some choices are better than others. Children will gain skills in working effectively as part of a group and in being a supportive friend. They will recognize that some relationships are particularly special and understand how these relationships help them feel safe and valued. Additionally, they will learn about various ways to maintain a healthy body and mind.

Whole-school approach

Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. The table below gives the learning theme of each of the six Puzzles (units) and these are taught across the school; the learning deepens and broadens every year.
